Which Cabinets Take Paint Well, and Which Ones Fight It

Not every cabinet accepts paint the same way. The material under the old finish decides how much prep the job needs and how the result holds up. Knowing what you have tells us how to prep it.

Solid wood and MDF doors

Oak with open grain

Lots of Bothell kitchens still have oak from the 80s and 90s. That deep, open grain shows through paint unless it is filled first. If you want a smooth modern look on oak, we grain-fill first. If you like a little texture, we can leave it and let the character show.

Thermofoil and laminate

These are not wood. They are a plastic layer over a core, so standard paint slides right off. We scuff them and use a strong bonding primer built for slick surfaces. Painting laminate kitchen cabinets works, but only with the right primer and a careful hand.

Older layered finishes

Homes around Norway Hill and the Sammamish River valley often have cabinets with decades of stain and varnish stacked up. That buildup has to be sanded back and sealed, or the new coat will not stick.

Where a Cabinet Finish Fails, and How We Prevent It

Will painted cabinets chip and peel? Only when the prep is rushed. A damp Bothell winter raises the stakes, since moisture trapped under a rushed coat lifts paint later. The finish fails at the prep stage, not the paint stage.

Here is where jobs go wrong and how we get ahead of it:

• Grease left on the doors. Kitchen grease drifts onto every surface near the stove. Paint will not bond over it. We degrease every face before a sander ever touches it.
• Glossy surfaces not dulled. New paint slides off a shiny old finish. We sand and deglaze so the primer has something to grab.
• Wrong or skipped primer. The primer does the bonding. We match it to your cabinet material, whether that is raw wood, sealed MDF, or slick laminate.
• No cure time. Paint dries in hours but hardens over days. Rush the doors back on and the finish dents and sticks. We let it cure before reinstalling.
